You ought to see these third class carriages - luxurient - nearly as good as our firsts. I was rather disappointed in the speed of the express, she went at a fair pace all along but seems to go exceptionally fast. Had a good sleep on the floor & woke up to find myself in Scotland on a beautiful sunny morning dashing through the rather bare country up to Edin. About 6 am we began to notice all the women & children coming out into the fields to work - ploughing & planting - it must have been pretty cold as the ground was white with frost. Arrived at Edin. at 8 am on Friday. Wandered into the city & found out Coates' who were recommended us a program for the day. Edin. is rather a small city with a beautiful main street - Prince's St (you have a small book at home of views of Edin. I recognised the street as soon as I saw it). Just like Macquarie St but with beautiful gardens & lawns where our Botanic Gardens are. Trams very slow & primitive as usual in every place I've seen except Sydney which in this regard leads easily.
