Dear Mother

You will be rather surprised to hear (or have you already heard?) that I am in hospital. Don't get alarmed - only mumps & very slight at that. It is very prevalent at present & I think I caught it escorting mumps patients from the trenches to our dressing stations. We had been relieved from the trenches & were running an institution known as Divisional Baths when this came on & I  had to report - to stop the infection spreading more than anything. It didn't affect me in the least as I feel as well as ever but I had to report so here I am & here I will remain for twenty one days over Xmas & the New Year at No  7 British Gen. Hos. about 50 miles from where I was. I would like to have spent Xmas with all the chaps but this is very comfortable. It is regarded by the infantry as a regular "cop" much better than muddy trenches & wet dugouts & is certainly much better than working at the Div Baths & sleeping on boards.
