Dear Mother,

I am just able to scratch a few lines at present as circumstances & opportunities will allow. Since last writing we have been on the move. We are now miles & miles from where we were having been hurriedly moved down here by train & forced marches bit by bit each day for over a week. We are in a village now & Jack & I & a couple of others with an MO are at present running an A.D.S. The work is not particularly brisk just now. Fritz having been checked for a while & I am writing this between times as the wounded come in. All gear has been dumped. I had to part with about a dozen pairs of socks & underwear washing gear & everything that was not essential. There is a chance that we may recover them again. I hope so.

We are in a very interesting part just now. All the villages & towns have been deserted in a hurry & things left just as their owners left them. There is plenty of wine & champage in the cellars - fowls & eggs - rabbits & we are living like lords. Poultry  is often on the menu, baked potatoes & all kinds of vegetables from the gardens.
