the bank of a canal & there we had preserved apricots cake & cocoa & cheese. It was just perfect here. We imagined the French civies sitting here in the cool of the evening drinking champagne & playing cards & here were we enjoying it all in swimming costumes. We used all their plates table & chairs - hammock & left it in good order - the roses were just budding & in another couple of weeks it would be a beautiful spot. Afterwards we went into a house next door nearly completely destroyed by a shell except the piano & had a musical evening.
Next day we moved & came to a spot a few miles away on the same river. Here we have made ourselves little dugouts & live in the side of a hill. Immediately in front is a big valley & the river winding through. We swim in the river & have about twenty boats attached to the place for conveying wounded if need
