Was sorry to hear about Mat Silva. Also heard today that Kenneth Styles had been killed. Alf Rofe met a chap who was in Kenneth's unit & brought him over to me. At first it was reported that Norman Simpson (a Kensington boy)  his mate was killed but it is Kevin who was killed. Norman Simpson is in hospital in England. A German plane came over one night & dropped a bomb on their horse lines on the Somme.

That cap Mrs Styles sent me is just the thing to wear under the steel helmet. In winter they are very cold. The wind could get in under them & we always had to wear something like a cap. I suppose Mrs Styles must be terribly affected & it is only one case in thousands. I don't think there is any chance of avoiding another winter here but I don't think we will have to put in two. Thank Mrs Davis for the tin of honey & tell her it was very much appreciated by many of the boys. I will try & write to her later. Haven't rec'd the parcels from Gwen or Glad yet - got a letter from Gwen today - one from Mr Ashton.

Am enclosing a photo in this letter, it speaks for itself - notice the shorts, the pipe, the long distance strip & gas masks.The masks are auxiliary ones we always carry & not the ones we wear in danger zone. Roy Jamieson got a M.M. out of the last stunt. You remember I told he was
