Dear Mother,

The first thing I must mention in this note is that we received your birthday parcel all right and had a real good time with it. Thanks so much for the handkerchiefs enclosed for me. I haven't washed the cake and brandy smell out of them yet.

As for my report on Verner's behaviour to date, I must tell you that he is at present suffering from a severe attack of badge-collecting. It is a disease we all have but he has it pretty bad just now.

In fact if Roy sees him talking to a stranger he gets within hearing distance and calls out - "I don't suppose you have any spare ..." then stops. It is generally a fairly good guess
