in so I just missed him.

We had a great time in the line & very quiet & practically nothing to do - perhaps one or two cases of a night. There were eight men at each relay post. We had a fine dugout about ten feet underground & safe from anything - gas proof too. The first day Fritz was trying to get on to a battery near us & we got most of the iron. One of our boys stopped a small piece in the arm. I would have given him anything for it - it was a little beauty. One night he put a few gas shells over near us - after the same battery - & we spent a couple of hours in our masks. The relay post above us is built of old biscuit tins & they have a piano - probably souvenired from the village which used to be near bye. We often made expeditions into the town to have a look around. It is knocked about terribly. The insides of houses are lying all over the streets & the streets torn up with shell holes. Telegraph
