case for gas lanterns & iron helmet. We will also be issued with glasses for use against lacrymatory shells. These are shells which discharge a gas - attacking the eyes making them water so much that one becomes blind temporarily - two hours about - although having no lasting effects. We have all been issued with "Tommy boots" - great big black things very strong & heavy & have to wear two pairs of socks with them. As soon as you get this letter start to send me socks regularly. We are only supposed to take a limited supply of clothes so I am leaving my surplus stuff at a place where I can write & have it sent across. Once we get across & settled we will have a chance of accumulating more stuff. The whole division was out the other day for a march. It took up about eight miles of road & the last part  moved off two hours after the first started.

At last the "Fighting 3rd" has declared war so we will get a great reception by the Australians in France when we arrive there. I met Mick Aspinall the other day he has not long arrived in England. The artillery who came with us on the Argyllshire failed in their tests later & have been put back till next February so now the 3rd Div will be supported by British artillery. I believe their
