"The approach to the home is through Groote Schum Avenue - a stately collonade of pines - leading to the famous residence which the Rt Hon. Cecil Rhodes delighted to make typical of Cape Colonial architecture & worthy of all that is best in S.A. The surrounding country for many miles is a part of the estate & is lavishly laid out in gardens, roaming grounds for various herds of S. African buck zebras & other animals & birds & adorned with various structures amongst which the most notable is the Classical Monument & Watts' Statue of Physical Energy erected by the nation to the memory of Mr Rhodes. The views of the Table Mountain & Devil's Peak on the one side & on the other the vast outlook over the Bay & Cape Flats bordered in the distance by mountain ranges will give as much delight to all spectators as they did to the great South African who chose the region as his place of residence & made it free to the people."
