& never had to stint ourselves. I think altogether we spent about  £16  each exclusive of presents.

Also staying with us was one of Paris' opera stars. Mlle Clavel. She was playing Tosca & Carmen at the Orleans at the time & we did not see her playing although she sang several of the operas to us in her room. This girl was a Parisian beauty. She is coming out to Australia one day & will be very glad to meet us there again.   There was also staying there a very clever woman who wrote plays. She is quite deaf & I used to have a yarn to her now & again on my fingers. Still another was a charming young Frenchman who was particularly interested in us because we had come so far & even volunteers. He took us to his home & showed us many photos of trips he had in Switzerland also through an ammunition factory & used to give us lessons in French. So you see we fell in amongst a very interesting & very cultured lot of people & they showed us no end of kindness.   The day after we arrived there Jack got a boil on the knee & had to lay up for a couple of days. They treated him royally - he had two nurses to look after him & was quite a
