The long line moved in single file winding along slowly - for the infantry were heavily laden with ammunition bombs rations flare lights rifles spades & picks - like a huge snake stopping, moving on at all kinds of paces. We neared a spot where fritz was shelling & passed it gradually without mishap. One lobbed pretty near but it was a dud. Everyone got on to their stomachs to receive it nevertheless.

After two miles we came to the R.A.P. at the entrance to the trenches but by some mismanagement, which turned out to be a blessing, we followed the infantry & entered the trenches. The file just ahead of us lost touch with the main body & our party found itself without guide. The trench led us through a wood towards a spot where Fritz was dropping 5.9's - we got a move on past this spot once or
