better in light sandstone. But the beautiful little square & wide streets & approach tend to magnify its beauty. The Royal Hotel is about the flashest in town, it has a wide verandah where light refreshments are served & two fine grill & dinner rooms. This part of the town looks very gay of a night. The light colour of the buildings show up well in the brilliant light. The band plays in the square & the toy like trams & gaily decorated rickshaboys dart about all over the place. The beauty of the place is not confined to the city. The latter is very flat surrounded by thickly wooded hills dotted with beautiful homes. There are not many Europeans in the town but they all must be well off. They all seem to have motors & each home has its lovely garden & lawn & in many cases tennis court & staff of servants to look after everything. The houses themselves are only out of date old things nothing modern at all but beautifully kept. The view from these hills is truly magnificent & vies with that
