No. 38
France
9/4/17

Dear Mother,

Received your letters Nos 29 & 30 & Dads enclosed & several others from Australia - we hadn't had a mail for about six weeks. Do you remember that cutting you sent me some time ago - An English womans letter about Australians - I forwarded it on to her & received a reply the other day. I am glad to hear that the big photo of the unit arrived alright. I had quite forgotten all about it. It seems to be common belief out there that the  winter here has been particularly severe. It might have been but none of us thought so - we all were of opinion that it must have been rather mild as it did not by any means come up to our expectations. We are still getting cold winds rain & snow occasionally but when the sun comes out it is delightful. When the weather is fine it is beautifully warm & the air is alive with aeroplanes. Saw a fine sight the other day - an engagement between about 15 planes - one was shot down in flames.

Billy is still in London but by his last letter he might have  a try to get back over here.
