twice making close contact with the earth as one landed & sent 100 "blighties" humming over our heads as it burst into as many jagged pieces. No one knew where we were going but we were bound for the battle R.A.P. in the front line so we followed a tape track marked "A" out of the wood & across country towards the verey lights. Nearer & nearer we drew, the night was quiet. Verey lights spouted now & again not a machine gun rattled.
After several fruitless inquiries we came to a trench full of men then [they] were moving about the parapet - whispering, one our fellows loudly inquired where the R.A.P. was, & was gruffly bidden to shut up.
