a fond habit of Jack's.

We found the French very kind.   On three times French ladies who could speak a little English came up to us in the street and enquired how we were getting on and if we had friends in Paris! and if you stop in the street and look as if you are lost you will have a crowd around you in no time, all giving directions at once.   I was caught like this once or twice when I started to enquire where such and such a place was.   They will argue between themselves as to where the place is and how to get to it and if you don't pretend to "compris" right away you will never get out of the crowd, or you will have about ten of them escorting you down the street to the place you want to find.

There are not many Australians in Paris and they consequently attract much attention when we are recognised from Americans.   There are many Americans there & their uniform is somewhat like ours.   The Americans are liked very much there and so are the "Aussies" because they have come such a long way and volunteers and you can't argue them out of that idea.
