time were completely knocked up - had nothing to drink & some dry bread & a few sardines to eat, so we asked the doctor for some "mother gum" as the boys call it (rum). One tot did the trick. In ten minutes my eyes were like bubbles on a plate - could have knocked them off with sticks. I felt happy & wanted to talk with everyone. However after I had manoervred the next case I felt as right as a bank & carried right through the afternoon to five o'clock. I couldn't have carried on without the rum I am sure. Later on we had a squad of Fritz's working for us. One AMC [Army Medical Corps] man & three Fritz's - no guard. They worked very hard all day. I saw one poor chap going at the knees - he had worked all day & then they discovered he had a big wound in his leg. We chaps used to take them in & give them a drink of water & some bully beef & then saddle up again. We once passed a guard with
