We crawled into a dugout & played cards while this was on - lasting about half and hour & dying out as suddenly as it had commenced. The raid was over & a great success but now our work started. An eerie calm prevailed, the moon came up & we were concerned with the grim aftermath. We carried till about 4 am & everything worked splendidly. To get the wounded away we commandeered all sorts off conveyances - carried through the trenches - trucked on a light railway for a distance then on a pair of wheels to the cars. Hot coffee was always ready for us & patients when we came in.
