& disposed of all that remained to us in the world. We wanted this for our nerves & more ridiculous circumstances it would be impossible to imagine. Three of us sitting in a turnip field passing round a bottle of champagne - all we possessed in the world - watching all our gear being shelled a couple of hundred yards away. This stopped after a while so we dashed back grabbed all the stuff which we had packed on wheeled stretchers & got off safely joining the C.O. up in the wood. We went back after to inspect the place & congratulated us on the successful evacuation. It was the funniest thing happened to me for a long time.

We lunched in the wood to the music of the phonograph - grand opera Faust & later on packed up & moved again to the other side of the wood. This was the funniest move we have ever had. During the boys stay in the village they had acquired pots & pans wheelbarrows push carts pull carts & gocarts & prams on which they wheeled their gear consisting mainly of laid in grub. Those who
