was narrow with sharp corners over which we had to lift to say nothing of the unsure footing. I was carrying behind & was on my knees three times in the first ten yards. At length we got to the end of the trench & out on to a road & found that we were lost - couldn't find the next relay. We had come up in the dark & at such a pace that it was impossible to take any note of the route.

We put the patient down & all set out in different directions to find this post yelling out at the same time. Struck a few deserted dugouts & at last found the right place. We had carried the patient half way along the next relay about a mile altogether & were 2 ½ hours away. I wouldn't like to imagine what kind of a trip the poor patient had in his condition as he still had three miles to go. Luckily the rain kept off. We got back  and at 10 to 4 am the barrage opened.
