Fontaine - France

26/11/16

Dear Mother,

We are now in France. Left Larkhill 21st inst.  at about 4 am & entrained to Southhampton. Talk about being loaded up it takes us half an hour to dress & undress & gas masks go on last & must be always ready. Caught ship at 7 pm & proceeded to Havre  arriving there at 7 am 22nd inst.

Had an awful trip very rough & sick  all the way, nowhere to sit or lie down as everywhere was in an awful mess - just stood up all the way. Jack had a bad time too. We passed between lines of patrols all the way. Spent the day at a rest camp & got quite well again after a good feed at the YMCA, some music & a good  lantern lecture. Left Havre next morning at 1 pm in train. We are packed in cattle trucks 35 in each so you can imagine what kind of a time we are having. The train has been travelling at about 4 miles per hour & we get out & walk most of the way to keep warm. There is an enormous congestion of traffic on the line. Miles of trains in front & behind us - we stop every few yards enabling us to visit every passing village & indulge in a coffee & cider - we buy bread from the peasants
