German dugouts remaining intact built above ground of concrete six feet thick & strongly reinforced. Our shells & theirs have failed to wreck them - they are very elaborate in their systems.

It would be a wonderful sight for you to sit on the top of this mountain with a pair of glasses & a map as I did & pick out all the places connected with the recent advance besides watching the battle going on far below.

I had a yarn to an old woman in a house on the side of the hill where we had some eggs. She told us many interesting things about the Germans when they were here for eleven days in 1914 & that the spot was a great tourist sight in peace times.

We have been back from the line a couple of days & are going back further in a few days for a long rest. This will be our first time out of the line for eight months, both the other ambulances have had their rest.
