5. The 'growling song' is one sung to everyone who growls. 'Lamps' is one of the crew - an inveterate growler.

6. Hot water is particularly scarce.

7. 'Spud barber' is a potato pealer  - cook's fatigue.

8. Our canine mascot had pups.

9. This refers to the gambling race game know  as 'Sandown'. There is a game at home.
