I suppose the death of Gen. Holmes & the narrow escape of Priv. Holman created a bit of a sensation in Sydney. It occurred quite near to us. If a day later might have been a world startling affair.

It is a very prevalent opinion amongst the men here that the war will be over about August though from all outward appearances it seems to me it will last for a few years yet.

Some the "heads" are supposed to have told the men in the trenches that the first boatload of Australians will be leaving for home in August. Things certainly look very hopeful especially re America & the Russian offensive but it is a big thing yet to crush Fritz although it is certain in time.

A dozen of us were attached to another ambulance for few days to reinforce them - we came back yesterday after a very lively time in the line. On our part [indecipherable] the front it seems that Fritz has withdrawn all his light artillery & is shelling with heavy stuff from a long way back. He is frightenend to bring up his field guns for fear we advance again.
