These people lost their son in the war at Verdun & in speaking about him they often used to break up. They were fine people & we were jolly sorry to leave them. The place was our home & many a happy night we spent in the family circle round the kitchen fire. The Sunday after we left them Len Barrow & I rode over on horses to see them - about 12 miles away. They were delighted & turned on a big tea for us & wanted us to stay the night. Every Tuesday Madame used to make her week's supply of bread & at the same time a loaf for us & two big apple tarts which she would proudly carry in when we were settling down to tea. When we were leaving that night she made us promise to come over next Tuesday & collect our tarts as usual. Every evening two of us would draw the water at the village well in a cask & wheel it home on a barrow - very old fashioned places - the great big open fire places with the kettle always
