Dear Mother

We are having a great time. Who said we didn't live well in the trenches better than anywhere else. Just listen to this feed we have just made look silly. Tomato soup - Jack cooked that course - a tin of meat & vegetables generally known in the army as "Maconochies" & containing or supposed to contain according to the label "beef potatoes carrots onions beans & gravy". Anyhow we'll say it does 'cause it tastes pretty good - that tin of camp pie you sent in the parcel - a tin of baked beans & a tin of asparagus - this course I cooked & fortunately Alf Moss & Cyril Wilson, our dugout mates didn't like asparagus so Jack & I settled the whole lot between us.   Next came that plum pudding you sent in the parcel - we had that fried in slices but Alf was beaten after the second course & couldn't go any farther after twice letting out his belt. I didn't mention cocoa & toast - these are minor appetisers - nor a little rex cheese to finish up on. We
