had been torpedoed in the Mediterranean. She had the Australian mails of 30th Sept on board so I don't expect to get any more letters for some time. Last Friday night some of our chaps got up a social dance in the Salisbury Town Hall & about thirty of us went over in a big char-a-banc. The Salisbury ladies provided the girls & supper & the boys paid for the hall. It was a great success & the first function of its kind to be held there since the war - 2 years. The Salisbury people are very struck with the Australians & are looking forward to a repetition.

On Saturday Jack & I went to London for the week end & did nothing but eat & listen to music & on Saturday night we struck a bosker restaurant in the Strand at the hotel "Waldorf". It cost us about 4/- plus various tips but was worth it. The dining room was very much like Farmers, each table had its own little electric light stand. There are plenty of such places in London if you only know where to find them - it took us some time but now we have about five or six such reataurants to choose from.

We tried to get into the opera after tea - Cavaleria [Cavalleria] Rusticana & Pagliacci - but had no hope so went to hear Mark Hamburg on at the Coliseum, a variety show. The Coliseum is about the leading concert hall in London & well might it be from its size & luxuriance. It is about twice as big as any of our theatred & has about four circles, lounges, smokerooms & supper rooms the floors everywhere
