roses of Picardy will be blooming. All these beautiful gardens are deserted & in place of gaily dressed civilians punting in the gondolo-like boats one sees barges of scantily clad Aussies taking full advantage of the beauty & sunshine & poling in & out of the winding & overhung canals.
The place is just lovely. Along the water's edge are gardens & nestling in the trees are week end places. As fatigues only take about one hour in the morning you can understand that there are not many of the boys anywhere else than on the canals by 11 o'clock. There are five baths too on the river & the Brigade held two carnivals there both of which we took part in winning several events. I will be sending home a trophy soon for the relay championship. The day before we shifted, a big crowd of us took our dinner & tea down to the baths & swam & baked all day. For tea we punted to a beautiful little summer house amongst an ornamental rose garden on
