Sunday 25 February 1917
Up at 7.45. After breakfast went up to the aerodrome and did various jobs. Very low clouds & generally hopeless in morning so got off to go back to the "Dell" to change & went to Croydon by tram to Mass. Just in time for High Mass that started at 11. Got back to the "Dell" about 1.15 & had lunch. Up to the aerodrome after as it was clearing up a little. Went up in my 2E to test the engine and report on the weather. Took Kitchen up for a joy ride. Clouds at about 1800 feet. Sent up an advanced pupil – Roberts – to take photos. He made an awful show landing, hit a tree and crashed in a most appalling way. The fuselage was snapped in two places & everything wrecked. Roberts himself escaped unhurt! Back to the "Dell" for tea. Then back to the aerodrome for the night landings. Roberts did his landing well. It was a stout effort after his crash! The next man taxied into the searchlight engine & damaged a plane – that finished night flying. Yarned after dinner till 10.45.
