Saturday 28 July 1917
Up at 6.30 for early flying. Tested a machine but did no dual. Back to breakfast about 10. In afternoon tested an engine & flew the new machine again. L.F. Clarke crashed an RE8 landing. Had a swim before tea. Old "Bo" Barnes had a bad crash in a Curtis [Curtiss] about 5 miles from the aerodrome. Cause of accident uncertain – probably the rudder broke in a spin. His passenger, one Cook was killed, & he was badly knocked about. Drove to the crash with C.O. and then to Sommerville Hospital. Back to C.O.'s house for supper about 11 & then by sidecar to camp.
Wire from Aunty saying that old Maurice has been wounded. He has a fractured leg & will probably be in London soon. Hooray!!
