Wednesday 7 February 1917
Didn't wake up till 10.30. Got up about 11 & had some breakfast. Loafed all day. Telegram came from home saying they are all well & that they were much consoled by my letter about dear old Roger. I am so glad that it was some help to them in all their sorrow. I am longing for news of Eileen soon. Went up at 11.15 p.m. on night flying. Attempted to do a moonlight registration on a German battery. Could see the gun pits very clearly but only saw two bursts as they were using delayed action fuzes. Gave up the shoot and went off to drop the eight bombs I had with me. Dropped one on Fournes, two on Chateau de la Vallee (one hit the house), two on Lattre (one hit railway station, and three on Provin aerodrome – two of which seemed to burst in the hangars. Fired a drum on Provin and one on Auchy. Flew mostly at 1500 feet. They fired at me with machine guns & sent up "flaming onions" from Provin. A most successful & enjoyable night's work. Snow & others did splendid bombing. Garland did a successful registration – the first ever.
