Sunday 18 February 1917
Up at 8. Taxi to 8.30 Mass at a tiny Church. Walked back to breakfast. Very foggy day. Worked on the car with Winkley all the morning. Off at 1 & after getting some things at the garage arrived at Lyndhurst at 2.30. Had lunch at the Grand Hotel – very nice. Drove on till we got to near Shoreham. The fog got very bad there & we crawled to Brighton arriving about 7. Garaged the car & took rooms at the Metropole – a ruinously expensive place. The drive was very enjoyable except at the end when the fog was hopeless. I drove part of the way. After dinner we got a taxi to 64 Marine Parade & saw Aunty & Cicely. They are very cheery. Stayed till eleven & walked back to hotel & had a cup of coffee & to bed.
