Monday 17 December 1917
Up at 8 & by tender to aerodrome from Beaulieu. Bitterly cold, but fine, but blowing a gale. Impossible to get off in morning. Before lunch I went up, under orders from the Colonel, & tested the weather – incidentally scrapped the Colonel who was on an Avro! After early lunch got the Fighters out & started off in a very high wind at 1.55 p.m. Followed Segrave for 30 mins. till clouds came below us. Segrave went below them & I followed. Found it very thick at 1000 ft. over Hythe (6 miles in 30 min.!). Found the aerodrome again & landed. Findlay had crashed getting off but was unhurt. Glanville had not started. Busy till dinner time arranging for another night here. Sharpe arrived after dinner. Message from Segrave who had reached Rendcomb. No news of Curtis or Cullinan! To bed at 10.30. Rather a disastrous day for us!
