Friday 23 February 1917
Up at 9. After breakfast went by bus to the Bank & got letters. Orders from the War Office to report for duty at 17 R.S. at Croydon. Taxi to Cooks & then to Alldays & Onions, Herbert Johnsons, and to Eastern Cable Coy. Back to the Thackeray. Packed & had lunch & then by taxi to Cox & Co. & out to Croydon. Reported to Adjutant & drove to the "Dell" & left my kit there. A passing car gave me a lift to near the aerodrome. Reported to Capt. Williams commanding "C" Flight. Saw Capt. Henderson the C.O. I am to fly RE8s & instruct on them. Back to the mess for tea & stayed there till dinner. Doesn't appear to be a very cheery spot. Most of the instructors have never flown in France.
