Thursday 1 February 1917
Up at 9. Cloudy at first but cleared later on. Went up at 10.45 with Burrell. Tried to register 18 pointers on two targets. Very hard to see bursts but eventually got them on to one target. They stopped after two salvos on the second. Got a bit of "archie" – some quite accurate. Landed at 12.10. Ward went up to do a shoot near us and an "archie" burst between the planes on the right hand side. Simply riddled the machine but neither he or Stewart were hit & got back to the aerodrome all right. No. 2 had a machine brought down by archie but landed safely. No. 16 had a machine shot down on photography.
Winkley & Bond have been ordered home & go in a few days. A new flight commander has arrived from England. He goes to A Flight. It is very encouraging to have outsiders coming in over our heads! Snow is coming to "C" Flight – that means that our three senior pilots will all be Australians.
