Saturday 24 February 1917
Up at 7.45. After Breakfast went up to aerodrome in the tender. Williams went off to Maidstone to bring back an RE8 that had forced landed, leaving me in charge of the flight. Went up at 11.30 on a BE2c to test the weather. Clouds & mist at 300 feet so landed after 5 minutes. McQuiston is going so I am to take over "B" Flight from him. Went round with him & looked things over during the morning. Back to the "Dell" at 12.30 for lunch. Stayed there after lunch & wrote letters till tea time. Rang up to try & find Maurice Winkley or Burney but no luck, so decided to stay in to-night. Yarned with Williams after dinner till 10.30. Apparently I have to pass a machine gun test here! It is damned nonsense & rot to treat a flying officer from France with all this sort of hot air.
