Sunday 13 May 1917
Up at 7.30 & to Mass. Back to breakfast & then to aerodrome. A perfectly glorious day – clear & warm. Did a lot of flying in REs & BE's. Old Sly crashed in an Avro. The machine hit the ground & burst into flames. Though the Avro was utterly destroyed, old Sly escaped practically unhurt. A most wonderful escape. In the afternoon I took a new RE8 up to 12000 feet in 25 minutes with a small passenger & 40 lbs. of ballast! Went right over to Gravesend. A lovely trip – went up without any coat & with my shirt sleeves rolled up! Wakeham wrote of [off] a BE2E on a hedge! Stayed at aerodrome till 9.15 for night flying.
