[Page 309]
Friday 12 October 1917
Up at 6 for early flying. Got some good work done. Tested a machine myself. Breakfast at 9. After breakfast went up to do some fighting but the clouds came over very low. Flying stopped about 11 when it started to drizzle. Completely "dud" all the rest of the day. Read "The Dreadnought of the Darling" by C.E.W. Bean all the afternoon. After dinner read some more & then to bed. Sharpe tells me I am to go out with 62. Anyway it is the best time of the year & will not be for long. Poor old Ward was shot down by 5 Huns. Burrell has lost a hand.
