Tuesday 9 January 1917
Up at 9. Too completely "dud" for work. In afternoon wrote letters. Cedric Cohen came in for a while. Played the Artillery goure [?] after tea. My cold is rather worse & is very heavy. Atkinson & Kellett came back this morning. They went over La Bassee at 1500 feet, instead of making for Bethune! Got every devilish form of frightfullness hurled at them & climbed into some clouds to escape. Got lost & landed south of the Somme!
A bomb raid to-morrow on some gun positions – utter waste of energy. I am not on it.
Letters.
