Saturday 7 April 1917
Up at 9. Fine but very misty. Spent the morning at aerodrome but very little flying. Back to aerodrome after lunch. Rode into Croydon before tea. Bought some sweets, & left films to be printed. Went to confession. Back to tea & then to aerodrome. Pethy accidentally flicked the lighted end of a cigarette into my eye. Hurt like fun! Got most of it out but Brocklehurst drove me to the chemist who couldn't get the rest out as it had stuck to the eyeball. Drove to the doctor who got it out with cocaine. Back to dinner & stayed in during evening. America has declared war.
