Sunday 28 January 1917
Up at 9. Very cold fine day and strong wind. Went up at 11.30 with Turner. Tried to register 5th D.A. on two targets. Couldn't see the bursts on the snow. Dropped two bombs on Aubers. Throttle jammed coming in so had to make virtually a forced landing on the aerodrome. In afternoon walked out with Burrell & had a skate on a frozen field.
Wire came from Aunty Mary saying that dear old Aunt Liz died peacefully on the 24th, R.I.P. These are sad days for all of us. Poor old Uncle Michael & the chicks, I feel so sorry for them. Darling Mother & Father will be more heartbroken than ever. I wish I were with them in all their trouble & sorrow.
