Wednesday 22 August 1917
Up at 6 for early flying. Gave dual to Flower, who then did a very good solo. Breakfast at 9.30. Back to the aerodrome. The C.G.S. [Chief of the General Staff] expected but he did not turn up. Flew round a formation before lunch. In afternoon it was blowing very hard. Rode to Oxford on motor bike to do some shopping. After tea went for a sail with Mitchell & Hopcroft. Not very exciting. Walked back across aerodrome. Went up to test new machine. Back to dinner about 8.45.
Got a very nice letter from Wilkinson.
