Monday 22 January 1917
Up at 9. Another dull day. Didn't go up though I was ready several times to go up. A frightful accident happened just before lunch. Two machines collided in the air coming into the aerodrome & crashed together from 300 feet. Poor Woodley & Kellett were killed. White is badly injured. Foster had a miraculous escape through being thrown clear & got off with a cut face & damaged wrist. I walked out to the crash afterwards. I have never seen anything like it – the two machines were simply a pile of unrecognisable wreckage.
After lunch walked out with Burrell & Burney & the dogs to see the frozen field behind Gonnehem. It was frozen over but too thin to bear.
Played poker after dinner & won 40 francs.
