Saturday 17 February 1917
Up about 8.30. After breakfast Winkley & I drove out through the New Forrest to Castle Malwood to see "Anzac" & Bickerton who are staying there with Mr. Hanbury. "Anzac" had gone into Southampton so we followed him there. Back to lunch at Castle Malwood. Had a very cheery time. It is an awfully nice place. Drove back after lunch to meet Brendan at the Skating Rink. Found a telegram waiting to say he is down again with influenza & can't come. Poor old chap – what rotten luck. Went off to the skating rink about 4. Back to dinner. Played billiards after.
The run to Castle Mallwood [Malwood] was delightful. Poor old "Anzac" is'nt going to Australia after all. They are sending him to the C.F.S. [Central Flying School] as a flight commander!
Letter to Brendan.
