occurred when we waited for results in 1981, Bob had ordered that Willie and I were to stay out of the way at home until the outcome became clear. At 6pm, as the polling booths closed, we headed back to Harbord. Our campaign workers gathered for the party at the Curl Curl Surf Club, where we would later join them. The communications centre in my Corso office awaited results. Bob would ring me when he knew who had won.

We sat in the lounge room, waiting with  two old friends, John and Kath Gibson. We had been teenagers in Manly together. John and Kath now owned a local bicycle shop, and we chatted away about the various models and the types of people who bought them.

At 7.30, I broke the rules and rang Bob.

"There are not enough results in from the booths yet," he said, "As soon as I know, I will call you."

His voice sounded grim. We waited for another twenty minutes.

Bob rang: "You are done, mate", he said calmly.
