"Freshwater Surf Club has faithfully patrolled the beach since 1908. In 1915 Duke Kahanomoku gave his historic exhibition of surfboard riding there. It was Austrlaia's first demonstration of the sport in the Hawaiian tradition.

"Extensive landscaping at Harbord beach in 1979 lead to the beach regaining its original title of Freshwater by popular demand in 1980.

"The MV Freshwater bears a proud name."

Of course, to those who understood, "Freshwater" was a symbol of the ascendancy of the workers over the establishment.
