There was a good round of applause and the band struck up again.   We continued our walk along the Corso, and around the corner to a private lunch at K's Snapper Inn.

We sat upstairs, in a corner of the upper dining room.   The table was against a window, looking out over the ocean.   I was near the window, on one side of Wran, with Thorburn on his other side.   The Special Branch Men sat across the table, shielding us from the other people in the room.

Wran seemed relaxed.   He sat back and listened to Thorburn and the men from the Chamber of Commerce talk about tourism.

We gazed together out the window at the perfect waves that were rolling in from the Pacific and breaking on the    beach.

"Whatever we do or say," I said quietly, "those waves are going to keep on rolling in."

He heard me, but he did not answer.
