Gabby and I were able to slip away, to find our waiting driver and LTD.

        The followig morning, Donna delivered a copy of my speech to the editor of  The  Manly  Daily.   The next day's edition carried a full page on the festival, with photos of the crowd and a story by Olga Masters.   The editor had been severe.   The final paragraph was printed as:

        "Official guests included the Minister for Immigration, Mr MacKellar; the Commissioner of Community Relations, Mr Al Grassby; and Warringah Shire President, Cr Gavin Anderson."

        There was no mention of the Premier's representative--my speech had been ignored.

        Alf Thorpe came into my office in a rage, decrying what he saw as not only an insut to me, but also to the Premier.   He insisted that I should make a formal complaint to the management of the  Daily.   So I wrote a letter to their managing director, protesting about the omission.

        A month went past.   There was no replay from  The  Manly  Daily, and my mind was occupied with other matters.   I was meeting dozens of people and discovering many local organisations.   Constituent representations kept Donna pounding away on the typewriter and piling letters on my desk.

        One night Willie and I attended a graduation
