After further adjournments in Wagga and Manly, it was agreed that all matters in regard to Peter should be heard concurrently in the Central Court in the City. Peter was allowed out on bail, apparently none the worse for his fortnight behind bars in Goulburn. He was now facing seven charges in all: six counts of possessing and using various restricted substances, and one of causing serious affront and alarm to a police sergeant.
We were in court again on the morning of the fourth of March, in the crowded old Courthouse in Liverpool Street. The chief magistrate quickly adjourned the charges for another ten days. He allowed the bail to continue on condition that Peter lived with his parents and attended a drug rehabilitation centre for assessment.
Coombsie had been tied up elsewhere that day, and had arranged for a colleague, John West to appear for Peter. After the hearing, as I was thanking West for his help, Peter abruptly turned away and disappeared into the crowded street. He was like a frightened animal running for cover.
