is exceedingly pretty, with trees, walks and drives all round. Ballarat is a nice city all the houses have gardens in front, and the streets are very wide & have trees along each side. The principal street Sturt Street is a model one. It is about 3 times the width of Martin Place. There are gardens and trees up the centre, and beautiful statues all along. St Seats are placed under all the trees. At the end of each seat is a little tin to put papers and rubbish in. It is a much more go ahead place than Balla Melbourne. They have electric trams here, which go much faster than the old cables in Melbourne. The shopkeepers here have a bally rat [?] though. The Bakers & butchers close on Wednesday, the other shops on Friday & the Banks & Gov. Offices on Saturday.

The School opened Tuesday, but merely to get the names down, so no work was done. We went 4 mls out to the N.E. of Ballarat to see some claims being worked. We then walked across country to the same distance to the S.E. to the see the Eureka Stockade Monument. It consists of an obl obelisk surrounded by 4 old fashioned cannons. The Stockade took place on Sunday 3 Dec. 1854. We also saw the obelisk erected over the spot where gold was first discovered in Ballarat 1851. After dinner we went to the Victoria United to see the manager Mr. Crab, because he is also trying to get us work. We then went
