Sydney and Melbourne to shame. Numerous little rivulets traverse the grounds. The beautifully kept lawns go right to the water's edge. Shady trees overhang the streams, making delightful scenes. It is hard to realise one is still in Egypt when there. It seemed almost as though we had sat on the Magic Carpet and were transported high in the air for thousands of miles to quite another part of the world. Many of the trees and plants were flowering. Though the colouring was most vivid and brilliant nothing seemed to clash. It appears natural for bright reds and greens, yellows etc to be alongside each other & to make an harmonious whole. The same thing is seen in the designs worked on the inside of Arab tents. Coloured strips are sewn in geometrical designs over the whole of the insides. The effect is rather pleasing than otherwise.

We went through the native village on the far side of the barrage. As the days become hotter the smells of a village increase as the square or perhaps even the cube. The flies increase in the same ratio as the smells. I would hardly believe it unless I had seen with my own eyes a
